Dad's doppelganger.

Creepy story about seeing my dad's doppelganger.

This happened when I was 8 years old. I saw my dad in the bathroom wiping himself off after a shower, but the problem is that he was supposed to be at his office at that time. I asked him, "Dad when did you come home?" He didn't say anything. I asked again and he closed the bathroom door in my face, and I went to the other room and didn't think much of it.

20 minutes later mom fixed me and my little brother lunch. So my mom, my brother and I all sat down to eat. I asked my mom, "Why aren't we waiting for dad?" She laughed and said, "Why would we? He won't be home until later tonight."

"But dad is home!" I exclaimed, and explained to her what happened in the bathroom.

We searched the entire house but couldn't find him anywhere. Creepy, right?

After dinner my little brother and I fell asleep. Mom stayed awake to watch TV, and I woke to moms scream. I rushed to look for her and found her at the bathroom door. She hugged me and wasn't able to speak. I looked at the bathroom, and it was empty.

I asked her what happened, and she said she saw my dad, that he was there. "Why did you appear out of nowhere?" She asked him when he got home, and she explained that she saw something that looked like him, until it made a utterly perturbing face, and she screamed, and that in no time I was there with her. When I was finally there, it disappeared.

Later that night dad came home and we told him everything that happened. I don't remember what we did after that but we moved out soon afterward.

Ouija board

The following is a true story about a Ouija board, and if you didn't believe they were some real weird stuff before, you will after reading this.

About a month after my dad passed away, some family friends got the brilliant idea to bring over a Ouija board. I know, right? Now, I'd never touched one, and I already was super squeamish about anything like this. While I ended up with a fascination of the paranormal, and write a lot of stories with creepiness and ghosts, I'm not much for horror (at least, not the gory side of it). I prefer to explore the emotional aspects of ghosts, and the grieving process following death. I also happen to believe in ghosts. After the rest of this story, you'll understand why.

When they brought in the Oujia board, I was pretty paranoid right away. That's because, when I was thirteen, I marathoned too many scary movies and turned myself into a wimp who was afraid of the dark. It also didn't help my case any shortly after that when I ended up in a toxic relationship with a person who forced me into theaters to see scary movies. So, when these family friends brought the Oujia board, I would not touch it. I decided to only observe the session.

If you haven't ever done a Oujia board session, there is a very basic precaution you should take. First, the person heading up the session repeated the phrase "Let no evil come from this board" or something to that effect. If you don't do this you're pretty much inviting malicious spirits into your house.

Next, there are some basics you should follow. The Oujia board, if you aren’t familiar with it, has the letters of the alphabet, numbers 0-9, Yes, No, and Goodbye on it. The participants should ask clear and direct questions, never double questions. After all, the spirit only has the options just mentioned to answer with. When the planchette moves over Goodbye, it means the spirit has left, and a new one can join you.

Now that you know the basics, I’ll let you know what happened during the session I witnessed. The spirit spelled out the name of my middle school. That in itself wasn’t very strange, because it was a nearby school which everyone in the room would have known. Things took a very weird turn when the spirit spelled out a full first and last name. That only I knew.

I was not touching the planchette, yet it spelled out a name there is no way any of the other people in the room could have known. All of the people touching it were either much older, or wouldn’t have gone to the same school at the same time as me and the person whose name was spelled out. No one else knew who it was.

This whole thing had moved from amusing to downright freaky. Shortly after, the spirit either started getting mad or was replaced with a malicious one, and started spelling out things like “kill” and “murder” and the session had to be ended. Whole lotta good that chant at the beginning did!

As if I didn’t already have enough nightmare fuel, the lady who brought the board was talking more about spirits after the session, and mentioned that you should never have a mirror facing a door or window, because it gives spirits free reign of your home. I know this seems like a load of crap, but I took it completely seriously for one reason.

Remember how I said I was afraid of the dark? Well, as it turns out, there was a particular room in the house which I would never enter in the dark. It always gave me the heebee jeebies. Fortunately, the downstairs lights could be turned on from upstairs, and vice versa. So, guess what I immediately realized about that particular room when I heard the thing about the mirror? If you guessed there was a mirror in it, you’re correct! Over the mantle, facing a window, was a mirror. Suddenly, my creepy feeling made perfect sense.

And so, ever since that very creepy and eventful day, I’ve believed in ghosts/spirits. Because of that, little moments like this have made their way into my writing over the years! Most recently, through my series of shorts, Yverwood Witches. Check out the third story, Amgine, which is about grieving and moving on, and has its very own Ouija board session! The next story I’ll be releasing is about a strange case of ghost possession!

The Yverwood series can be read in any order after the first short, Toil and Trouble, serves as an intro to the series. Best of all, short one is only 99 cents, or free if you sign up for my newsletter!

Thanks for having me on the blog today!

The Presence

The Presence (a true ghost story)

I’ve never seen a ghost. However, my mother believed she saw them all the time. She told us many stories of her supernatural encounters, including this one.

My mom was a school teacher in Singapore. At the time this occurred (in the 1960s or so), she was very involved in the scouts and would bring kids to remote areas in Singapore to camp and hike. After the activity was done, she would take a few kids home, which resulted in her driving long distances in some very quiet and dark places.

After one particular camping trip, she was driving in the early hours of the morning on a road surrounded by old graves and trees. She saw a patch of mist in the middle of the road. It’s not unusual for ground mist to occur in Singapore because of the high humidity. However, this mist was actually moving. As my mother headed down the road, she saw the mist move from the graveyard to the road. Short of stopping and turning around, she had to pass through it. She had a bad feeling about the mist but kept going because it was late and she wanted to get home.

My mom said she felt an intense chill as she drove through the mist. She broke out in goosebumps. She shook off the feeling and continued on her way.

Mom lived alone in a small apartment. She went to bed as soon as she arrived home. The next day, she had a strong feeling that she wasn’t alone. There was something in the apartment with her, and it wasn’t friendly. The feeling was especially bad at night.

She became so frightened that she talked to the thing and asked it not to harm her. It didn’t, but her fear grew anyway. After about a week, she couldn’t take it any longer. She called my grandfather (who lived in the neighboring country of Malaysia), broke down in tears and told him what happened.

My grandfather told her to hang in there. He came two days later with a Taoist shaman. The priest confirmed there was a presence in the apartment. It hitched a ride while my mother was driving beside the graveyard. The priest said prayers and blessed the apartment.

After that, my mother felt the presence was gone.

The moral of the story: avoid patches of mist at the graveyard. They may be lost spirits looking for a new home.

I'm Your Daisy

Let me tell you about myself. My name is Daisy Devenrue. You might recognize the name from a few years back when it was splattered all over news and milk cartons. I was fourteen when I was abducted by a monster. He wore the form of a man but he was a monster who used the pain and blood to feed both their hunger and their desires. He had me chained to a wall for ten days and I was bloodied, battered and on the verge of death and longing for it if I’m honest with myself. The monster walked down the damp cement steps into this dark hell and suddenly he flipped on the lights and though they were small wattages they were more than enough to blind eyes that had been in the total darkness for what? Two day’s since he had last fed me and tortured me? He stepped forward and started to undo my shackles.

“You’ve been a wonderful little plaything dear but your energy is almost exhausted and it’s time for you to die that I can make room for the next little morsel. His long snake like tongue licking at the blood seeping from my wrists. He raises his hand and his fingers become claws. Hard and sharp. Razor blades prepared to end my life and despite my earlier wish to end the pain I cringe away from him and he smiles with a mouth full of ragged teeth.
“It’s your time little one.” He hisses and the blades slash toward me at unbelievable speed. I’m dead is my last thought as I turn my face and shut my eyes.
Several long moments pass and I don’t feel the blades biting into my skin. I heard harsh, labored breathing and when I open my eyes there’s another man standing there leering into the monsters face. I struggle to break loose from his grasp without avail.
“You’ll not slay her, Rwathrn. You have killed your last mortal.” The new comer said. His eyes unnaturally large and dark. Backlit irises of the deepest black like thin sheets of onyx overlaying lightning. Where his whites should have been they were crimson with veins showing even darker. So were they just fighting over who got to eat me?  Suddenly the long, thin rapier darted out and the claws feel from the monsters extended hand along with his fingers and the air was filled with a terrifying screamas a strange, thickly sluggish liquid flowed from the stump which had been severed with the precision of a surgical laser. I was free. The monster stumbled backward and flung up his remaining hand. The blades barely blocking the long rapier in the other man-monster’s hand.
“Flee little one! Get yourself far from here!” The old man who had arrived from nowhere to save me. I looked at the battle being waged in front of me and the blades laying on the floor and I grab one by the attached finger to keep from cutting myself and without thought I start to move. The fear and despair of earlier now turns into an all consuming rage. I charge into the melee and slash at the legs of my captor. I hear another wail from him as his leg separates. His foot and lower leg remains in the spot it last touched down. The rest of his body rolling to one side as the old man slices deep with his rapier, almost decapitating him but he doesn’t stop with this move. He drives the rapier into the monster’s mid section and slices upward slicing through his torso. The monster falls to the floor in a pool of the black liquid and then his body and the black pool explode into a large burst of dark energy that burns so hot it drives me back toward the steps. I’m too weak to keep going but I smile as I watch the monster pay for my abuse. I could die satisfied. I slumped to the floor and closed my eyes, letting the darkness claim me.
“No, you don’t little one. You’re going to live through this night. Now on your feet.” The old man barked in my ears. I lunged to my feet and looking around, my eyes fell on the claws. Laying on the floor I dart for them but the old man pulls me back and tosses me a leather sack.
“If you want them that badly, they’re yours. Use the bag to pick them up and store them in. It’s made from the only thing the blades aren’t able to cut.” He said and I did as instructed. We leaned on each other as we climbed up those damp stairs and after he cut through the lock we stepped out the door and into the cool night air of a late fall night.  He leads me to an old beat up pickup and helps me into it’s cab. Sleep now child because you’re going home. He said softly and sleep I did.

Cabin in the woods

There was a hunter in the woods, who, after a long day hunting, was in the middle of an immense forest. It was getting dark, and having lost his bearings, he decided to head in one direction untill he was clear of the increasingly oppressive foliage. After what seamed like hours, he came across a cabin in a small clearing. Realizing how dark it had grown, he decided to see if he could stay there for the night. He approached, and found the door ajar. Nobody was inside. The hunter floped down on the single bed, deciding to explain himself to the owner in the morning.

As he looked around inside the cabin, he was surprised to see the walls adorned by several portraits, all painted in incredible detail. Without exception, they appeared to be staring down at him, there features twisted into looks of hatred and malice. Staring back, he grew increasingly uncomfortable. Making a concerted effort to ignore the many hateful faces, he turned to face the wall, and exhausted, he fell into a restless sleep.

The next morning, the hunter awoke --- he turned, blinking in the unexpected sunlight.  Looking up, he discovered that the cabin had no portraits, only windows.

Meeting the Neighbors

The sun was dipping below the horizon, painting the sky in reds and purples. I was sitting on my back deck looking out of the rolling mountains of NorthEast Georgia with only my two ridgeback hounds Thor and Odin for company. The air still held a chill in early March and I had a fire burning in the pit as I sat sipping a Jack and Coke while enjoying a smoke. The radio was playing softly in the house with the mellow streams of old jazz drifting on the air. The dogs had been out earlier and were content to lay at my feet sleeping as we enjoyed our home. About twenty minutes had passed and the sky had darkened into night and I had slipped into a contented lull of drowsiness when the dogs leapt to their feet. The sound of their warning barks filled the air as they shot off the deck and down into the darkness on the other side of the fire which was still burning strong.  I could hear their growling then the flat thud of flesh being struck and the yelp of pain as one of them was hurt and I jumped to my feet and looked into the darkness, seeing nothing,

I might not be able to see anything but something had slapped one of my dogs hard enough to hurt it, perhaps seriously. I was sober now, the adrenaline was coursing through my system and it had burned through my buzz. I raced towards the sliding door, its glass reflecting distorted images of the fire pit as well as myself. The wooden decking bouncing dully under my feet.  The glass door rattled in its frame as I slammed it open and raced to my gun rack. I returned moments later with a flashlight mounted old production Bushmaster chambered in .300 blackout and my .454 Casull chambered Ruger Blackhawk riding on my thigh. I called sharply to the dogs once more, trying to get them back in the relative safety of the house. I heard one of them growling around 20 yards from the fire pit and when I stared into the darkness behind the fire pit I thought I saw large eyes staring back in a rage from beyond it. Keeping the gun trained on the fire pit I drew over to the sounds of the dog and found Thor standing over the fallen body of Odin. He was scared, you could read it in his body language but he was determined to defend his litter mate to the end.

I moved over to them on a run. My eyes swept the darkness in vain but then I turned as I heard something behind me but even as I did I knew I was far too late and far too slow. A giant, misshapen hand reached out and grabbed the rifle by the barrel and wrenched it from my hand.  It was so strong that I didn’t have time to release it as it was just ripped from my hands. I like to think I backpedaled out of harm’s way but in reality I stumbled and it was blind luck that took me out of the path of the rifle that was now whistling through the air like a cave man’s club. I drew the pistol at my side and triggered three rounds into the large mass looming above me.Three shots that sounded like one clap of man made thunder deafened me. Then a sound carried above the shots. The air was filled with a howl somewhere between a bull ape’s and a demon from the deepest pits of hell.

I didn’t think there was any way I could have missed but either I did or this thing had just absorbed three rounds of .454 Casull, almost twice as powerful as a .44 magnum and all I had managed to do was make him mad. He growled deep but it sounded as if maybe I had struck something vital afterall and then it was gone. There was no more noise or stumbling. It was there one second and gone the next. I shook my head in disbelief. If it weren’t for the demolished rifle and the dog fighting for its life I would think I had imagined the entire thing. I scooped up Odin and called Thor to me and we retreated into the house and straight through to the front drive and my F250 pickup. I laid Odin in the front seat and secured Thor in their carrier in the back and called their vet on the way into town. I just told him something had attacked Odin and he was in rough shape. I pulled into the Vet’s office and he met me to get Odin in an exam room. I had him board Thor as well and paid him for the early start and left to find a hotel as this was really starting to get to me. I was suddenly bone tired and I needed sleep. I pulled into the lot of the Holiday Inn and booked a room for 2 days so I could sleep through check out and fell across the bed.

Everything worked out ok. Odin lived through his ordeal and I found a blood trail next to the busted rifle but I was neither brave nor dumb enoigh to follow it into the woods. We settled into a watchful wait as the summer dragged on. This was the first but certainly not the last of my encounters with the strange beasts that lived near my home but they weren’t going to run me off. That was twenty six years ago and we established an uneasy truce along the way.

Prairie Man

 Prairie Man

By:Justin Jackson

The sun slowly drew back its reach, leaving behind a calm grey air upon the grassland. Prairie dogs yelped and scurried away as a man on horseback slowed to a stop. He noticed a carriage up ahead, with a fellow outside emptying his bladder and a lady inside patiently waiting to keep moving. The horseman pulled out his medicine bag, carefully concealing his wheel gun with all of his medicine and herbs. He slowly approached the unaware gentleman from behind, startling him by readying the pistol’s hammer. “Everything on you and anything valuable in the carriage please.” The medicine man had done this many times before, now it almost felt like a dance to him. The carriage driver emptied his pockets in frustration, arguing that the couple had spent all their money in town. The medicine man thought for a moment, looking at his medicine bag. “Need some medicine? Up for a trade?” The man shook his head, not knowing what more this stranger needed of him.

BANG!

The man cried out in pain, holding his knee as he fell to the ground. The medicine man laughed heartily, ignoring the woman who now screamed in the carriage, moving fearfully in a doomed attempt to avoid him as he barged in. Her jewelry and her handbag were quickly snatched away, the only trace left of the medicine man was some bandages and alcohol for the man he shot. Stories like this began to blow around like tumbleweed, stories of a highwayman who disguised himself as a traveling doctor. The man was James Sleater, and this is howhe was never found again.

Sleater rode through the fog and quiet evening, scanning the hills for carriage lights. His eyes met with a curious bouncing light in the distance, and so he rode with determination like a moth to a flame. The fog quickly separated to reveal a small native woman, struggling to carry a large candle-lit lantern. “You shouldn’t be here.” The womanspoke feebly and with terror in her throat. Sleater frowned and pushed past her, riding further up the hill and deeper into the fog. The air grew cold, and the fog seemed to thicken with each passing foot. Still the highwayman rode, his horse neighing and whinnying with each call and kick to go faster. Soon enough, his horse made a strange sound, like a man grunting. With each further step his horse grew more vocal, now coughing and clearing his throat. The highwayman began to feel afraid. He got off his horse to give him some food, only to find two human eyes staring at him in place of his horse's eyes. Sleater was shocked but further horrified at the intensity and sentience the eyes carried with their stare. Again the horse cleared its throat, parting its lips as if it were about to speak. The highwayman felt the last shred of sanity leave him as his boots took to the dirt, carrying him off into the fog screaming. That was the last anyone ever saw or heard of the Highwayman, however, some say if you find yourself in the prairie at the right weather and in the wrong wind, you may see an odd horse scanning

the prairie with its humanlike eyes for another victim to rob.
