Unknown Visitors

Wife and I leave home around 5pm on a Saturday to go to dinner and movie. Always lock up when we leave. Live on a second floor. Windows locked and cannot access unless owning a large ladder. We come back home. At first, I didn't notice. Walked right past. Go to hang my coat by front door. Kitchen to my left. Every cabinet and drawer in the kitchen wide open. Think someone broke in. Door is steel with two deadbolts, set in a steel reinforced door frame, no window on the door. Only a peep hole. No windows unlocked. Nothing stolen. Nothing else unsettled. No ideas what happened. Never happened again.

Hounds of the night!

Hounds of the night

The following story took place at my home. I think it was in 2007. It was around 2:00 a.m., and I was taking my dog out. I turned on my front porch light and walked out the front door of my home 50 feet to the strip of grass across my driveway. As I was watching my dog do his business I turned to the right, looking toward the road, and 40 feet away there were two large, lean dogs standing facing me. They were flanking the narrow part of the driveway that leads to the road, facing inward toward each other with their heads turned toward me. A streetlight on the road at the end of the driveway was shining 50 feet behind them. They stood still but they were moving (i.e. they were alive, not statuesque). As soon as I saw them my immediate reflex was to grab my dog and get inside quickly, which I did. I locked the door and ran upstairs to the window that overlooks the driveway and the whole area all the way out to the street, and they were gone.

These were very solid appearing apparitions. There was no difference in their appearance from living creatures, yet I am certain they were not real living dogs. I’ve never seen dogs like this. I’ll never forget them and can picture them even as I write this They were the size of Great Danes but with the lean bodies of greyhounds. There were no dogs even close to resembling these in my neighborhood, much less any that would be roaming free in the middle of the night and standing symmetrically at the foot of my driveway.

Attached is my depiction, although I would place the fronts of their bodies facing me more.

My Visit to Scotland!

My Visit to Scotland

Some background: the reason I went to Scotland in 2018 had nothing to do with the 'Outlander' craze, etc. I'm Wiccan. I believe in past lives with unfinished business.

As long as I can remember, I've needed to go 'home' to Scotland. I didn't know where that home was. Only that I had been forced to leave and I'd sworn to return. My trip was to find that place.

I found three of them.

One was a trail out on Black Isle, across Moray Firth from Inverness. It's called Fairy Glen. Within minutes of starting the hike, I was smiling. I could not stop. This was one of the homes, the first one I didn't expect (the one I was searching for had been found two days earlier). At the end of the hike, there's a small pool of water and a waterfall.

Honestly, it's breathtaking. Yes, I have photos. But they don't convey the power of the place.

I stayed, as there was something at the pool I had to hear. The person who was hiking with me went further up the trail. I received the message I was meant to hear, and my soul was given a sense of peace I'd never felt before and long to feel again.

Hiking companion came back, and we began to walk out. That's when the music started. A single fife, notes drifting between the trees and dancing off the ferns. Music that gave my soul pause.

Music that made me confirm that the other person heard it. Because, if they didn't, I knew I was being invited to Tir N'aill. And I knew I would answer such a summons.

They did, and I would be lying if I didn't feel any sort of disappointment. We did hear it as we walked, off and on. Eventually we caught up to a couple. She had a fife and would occasionally play traditional Scottish or Irish tunes on it as they walked.

For me, though, there was magic on that trail. The music simply reminded me that things are not always as they seem.

Have I Seen a Ghost?

Have I Seen a Ghost?

I love ghost stories, and I’m an author whose books feature ghosts, monsters and the supernatural. I, however, have not personally seen a ghost.

Don’t get me wrong. I don’t not believe in ghosts. I have gotten the chills in some places. Witnessed an actual apparition though? Nope. Well … maybe. There are at least two occasions in which I thought I saw something.

The earlier incident was when I was much younger. I was backpacking in Europe at the time. I was in London, visiting a friend at an old building that had been converted into a youth hostel. It was in the afternoon. I went to the women’s restroom on the ground floor.

You had to walk through two doorways connected by a narrow five-foot-long hallway to get to the restroom. The outer door opened to the lobby and the inner door led to the restroom.

As I opened the outer door, I saw the inner door close behind someone just ahead of me. I caught a glimpse of a white shirt or dress and the back of her head. I thought nothing of it at the time.

The restroom had about five or six stalls. I went into one of the stalls and did what I had to do. I was washing my hands at the sinks when it struck me that I hadn’t seen anyone else in there, or heard another person. I was so puzzled that I actually looked to see if the restroom had another exit. There was only one—the one I used. I glanced into the other stalls but it was clear I was the only person in there.

The hair at the back of my neck was standing by then so I left as quickly as I could.

The other occasion was at an old hotel in Florida. I was working as a journalist. I stayed at the hotel to cover a legal conference that was held at the hotel.

After a long day of panel discussion, After a long day of panel discussions, I returned to my room in the evening. I stepped through the door and was walking quickly past the bathroom when I saw something in there from the corner of my eye. It was a woman looking at herself in the mirror. I was startled because I hung a “Do Not Disturb” sign on the door so I didn’t expect any maid service.

I dropped my bag and laptop on the bed and went back to the bathroom to tell the woman that my room didn’t need cleaning. However, there was no one there.

Perhaps she was an optical illusion, the effect of my eyes adjusting to a dark room. But I saw her so clearly in my mind. She was middle-aged and had short dark hair.

In any case, I slept with all the lights on that night.

So what do you think? I told myself in both instances that I must be mistaken. I scared myself for no reason.

Or have I seen a ghost? I’ll let you be the judge.

Dad's doppelganger.

Creepy story about seeing my dad's doppelganger.

This happened when I was 8 years old. I saw my dad in the bathroom wiping himself off after a shower, but the problem is that he was supposed to be at his office at that time. I asked him, "Dad when did you come home?" He didn't say anything. I asked again and he closed the bathroom door in my face, and I went to the other room and didn't think much of it.

20 minutes later mom fixed me and my little brother lunch. So my mom, my brother and I all sat down to eat. I asked my mom, "Why aren't we waiting for dad?" She laughed and said, "Why would we? He won't be home until later tonight."

"But dad is home!" I exclaimed, and explained to her what happened in the bathroom.

We searched the entire house but couldn't find him anywhere. Creepy, right?

After dinner my little brother and I fell asleep. Mom stayed awake to watch TV, and I woke to moms scream. I rushed to look for her and found her at the bathroom door. She hugged me and wasn't able to speak. I looked at the bathroom, and it was empty.

I asked her what happened, and she said she saw my dad, that he was there. "Why did you appear out of nowhere?" She asked him when he got home, and she explained that she saw something that looked like him, until it made a utterly perturbing face, and she screamed, and that in no time I was there with her. When I was finally there, it disappeared.

Later that night dad came home and we told him everything that happened. I don't remember what we did after that but we moved out soon afterward.

Ouija board

The following is a true story about a Ouija board, and if you didn't believe they were some real weird stuff before, you will after reading this.

About a month after my dad passed away, some family friends got the brilliant idea to bring over a Ouija board. I know, right? Now, I'd never touched one, and I already was super squeamish about anything like this. While I ended up with a fascination of the paranormal, and write a lot of stories with creepiness and ghosts, I'm not much for horror (at least, not the gory side of it). I prefer to explore the emotional aspects of ghosts, and the grieving process following death. I also happen to believe in ghosts. After the rest of this story, you'll understand why.

When they brought in the Oujia board, I was pretty paranoid right away. That's because, when I was thirteen, I marathoned too many scary movies and turned myself into a wimp who was afraid of the dark. It also didn't help my case any shortly after that when I ended up in a toxic relationship with a person who forced me into theaters to see scary movies. So, when these family friends brought the Oujia board, I would not touch it. I decided to only observe the session.

If you haven't ever done a Oujia board session, there is a very basic precaution you should take. First, the person heading up the session repeated the phrase "Let no evil come from this board" or something to that effect. If you don't do this you're pretty much inviting malicious spirits into your house.

Next, there are some basics you should follow. The Oujia board, if you aren’t familiar with it, has the letters of the alphabet, numbers 0-9, Yes, No, and Goodbye on it. The participants should ask clear and direct questions, never double questions. After all, the spirit only has the options just mentioned to answer with. When the planchette moves over Goodbye, it means the spirit has left, and a new one can join you.

Now that you know the basics, I’ll let you know what happened during the session I witnessed. The spirit spelled out the name of my middle school. That in itself wasn’t very strange, because it was a nearby school which everyone in the room would have known. Things took a very weird turn when the spirit spelled out a full first and last name. That only I knew.

I was not touching the planchette, yet it spelled out a name there is no way any of the other people in the room could have known. All of the people touching it were either much older, or wouldn’t have gone to the same school at the same time as me and the person whose name was spelled out. No one else knew who it was.

This whole thing had moved from amusing to downright freaky. Shortly after, the spirit either started getting mad or was replaced with a malicious one, and started spelling out things like “kill” and “murder” and the session had to be ended. Whole lotta good that chant at the beginning did!

As if I didn’t already have enough nightmare fuel, the lady who brought the board was talking more about spirits after the session, and mentioned that you should never have a mirror facing a door or window, because it gives spirits free reign of your home. I know this seems like a load of crap, but I took it completely seriously for one reason.

Remember how I said I was afraid of the dark? Well, as it turns out, there was a particular room in the house which I would never enter in the dark. It always gave me the heebee jeebies. Fortunately, the downstairs lights could be turned on from upstairs, and vice versa. So, guess what I immediately realized about that particular room when I heard the thing about the mirror? If you guessed there was a mirror in it, you’re correct! Over the mantle, facing a window, was a mirror. Suddenly, my creepy feeling made perfect sense.

And so, ever since that very creepy and eventful day, I’ve believed in ghosts/spirits. Because of that, little moments like this have made their way into my writing over the years! Most recently, through my series of shorts, Yverwood Witches. Check out the third story, Amgine, which is about grieving and moving on, and has its very own Ouija board session! The next story I’ll be releasing is about a strange case of ghost possession!

The Yverwood series can be read in any order after the first short, Toil and Trouble, serves as an intro to the series. Best of all, short one is only 99 cents, or free if you sign up for my newsletter!

The Presence

The Presence (a true ghost story)

I’ve never seen a ghost. However, my mother believed she saw them all the time. She told us many stories of her supernatural encounters, including this one.

My mom was a school teacher in Singapore. At the time this occurred (in the 1960s or so), she was very involved in the scouts and would bring kids to remote areas in Singapore to camp and hike. After the activity was done, she would take a few kids home, which resulted in her driving long distances in some very quiet and dark places.

After one particular camping trip, she was driving in the early hours of the morning on a road surrounded by old graves and trees. She saw a patch of mist in the middle of the road. It’s not unusual for ground mist to occur in Singapore because of the high humidity. However, this mist was actually moving. As my mother headed down the road, she saw the mist move from the graveyard to the road. Short of stopping and turning around, she had to pass through it. She had a bad feeling about the mist but kept going because it was late and she wanted to get home.

My mom said she felt an intense chill as she drove through the mist. She broke out in goosebumps. She shook off the feeling and continued on her way.

Mom lived alone in a small apartment. She went to bed as soon as she arrived home. The next day, she had a strong feeling that she wasn’t alone. There was something in the apartment with her, and it wasn’t friendly. The feeling was especially bad at night.

She became so frightened that she talked to the thing and asked it not to harm her. It didn’t, but her fear grew anyway. After about a week, she couldn’t take it any longer. She called my grandfather (who lived in the neighboring country of Malaysia), broke down in tears and told him what happened.

My grandfather told her to hang in there. He came two days later with a Taoist shaman. The priest confirmed there was a presence in the apartment. It hitched a ride while my mother was driving beside the graveyard. The priest said prayers and blessed the apartment.

After that, my mother felt the presence was gone.

The moral of the story: avoid patches of mist at the graveyard. They may be lost spirits looking for a new home.
